Staying Safe In The Sun

Most of Saskatchewan gets, on average, over 2000 hours of sunshine a year! While we all appreciate a beautiful sunny day, it is important to protect yourself and your family from long-term consequences of too much sun, such as skin cancer.

  1. Try to limit sun exposure between 11 am and 3 pm, as this is when the sun’s radiation is the strongest. Try to plan activities in the shade as much as possible.
  2. Use SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen, and re-apply regularly, especially after swimming or sweating.
  3. Babies under 1 year of age should be kept out of direct sunlight. A few ways to do this are to use a stroller with a canopy, an umbrella, or a heavily shaded spot. As well, it is good to dress an infant in loose-fitting, lightweight clothing that covers the arms and legs, as well as sun hats with a wide brim. Sunscreen specific to babies or children can also be used.
  4. Those aged 60 or older face a higher risk for developing skin cancer. Please remember that it is never too late for sun protection! Keeping your skin healthy can help you live your senior years to the fullest.
  5. Certain medications can cause your skin to become over-sensitive to the sun. Always check all side effects of any medications before taking them. If you develop an unusual reaction, check with your doctor.
